From the 13-th till 15-th December the Swiss-Ukrainian Milk Safety Project held a technical workshop on the preparation of representatives of the SSFSCP on the basic principles of risk assessment in the sphere of ​​animal and human health, and food safety. The seminar was attended by representatives of the core group of risk assessment team (veterinarians, epidemiologists, laboratory specialists), experts of the SSFSCP of the central and regional levels of pilot oblasts, State Research Institute for Laboratory Diagnostics and Veterinary and Sanitary Expertise and other interested specialists.

The third Meeting of the Steering Committee of the Swiss Ukrainian Milk Safety Project was held
The meeting of the Steering Committee of the Swiss-Ukrainian project "Establishment of a risk-based food safety control system in the dairy value chain in Ukraine" was held on the 7-th of December 2017. The meeting was attended by Volodymyr Lapa, the Head of SSFSCP, Holger Tausch, the Director of the Swiss Cooperation Office in Ukraine, Mykola Moroz, the Director of Food Department of the Ministry of Agrarian Policy and Food of Ukraine, Manon Schuppers, the Director of SAFOSO, and the representatives of professional associations.
During the Steering Committee Manon Schuppers presented the report for the previous year and the action plan for the next year. Training for specialists of territorial bodies of the state service of Ukraine on food safety and consumer protection was held in Kharkiv oblast
Within the framework of Component 2 of the Swiss-Ukrainian project the next training for the specialists of territorial bodies and the Main Directorate of the State Service of Ukraine on Food Safety and Consumer Protection in Kharkiv oblast was held in Kharkiv city on 25-27 October 2017. The training had two objectives: to raise awareness about the importance of applying best practices for production of safe milk and use of a modern inspection approach at all stages of dairy value chain.

The next training for milk transporters and milk collection points was held in Vinnytsya oblast
The Swiss-Ukrainian Milk Safety Project organized the next training for milk transporters and milk collection point employees in the framework of cooperation with Milk Collection Point in Prushynka village, Kozyatyn district, Vinnytsya oblast. The event aimed at increasing awareness on the importance of maintaining cool chain with high hygiene standards from a farm/milk collection point to a processing enterprise.
In her speech Valentyna Panasyuk, the head of the Milk Collection Point, also stressed the importance of keeping records.

Oct 20.2017 
Swiss-Ukrainian milk safety project held the next training for medium-sized milk producers in Vinnytsya oblast
On 17-18 October 2017 in the framework of Component 3 “Involving the private sector into food safety control system” the training for medium-sized milk producers was held in Vinnytsya oblast. About 50 managers, livestock specialists, and veterinarians of agricultural enterprises and farms which supply raw milk to LLC “Loostdorf” as well as representatives of the commercial dairy farm of LLC “Azorel” participated in the two-day training. The Project cooperates with both milk processing enterprises in the framework of the Memorandum of Understanding. The aim of the training was to have clear understanding of importance to use best practices of milk production, livestock feeding and management, and milking hygiene to improve raw milk quality and safety.

On 3 – 5 October the Swiss-Ukrainian Milk Safety Project held the training for the specialists of territorial bodies and the Main Directorate of the State Service of Ukraine on Food Safety and Consumer Protection in Poltava oblast.

The trainings for milk transporters, milk collection points and medium-sized milk producers were held in Kharkiv oblast
On 2 October 2017 in the framework of Component 3 “Involving the private sector into food safety control system” the next training for milk transporters and milk collection points (MCP) of one of ten Project partners LLC “S-Trans” was conducted in Zmiiv town of Kharkiv oblast. The aim of such trainings is raising awareness about the importance of maintaining a cool chain with high standards of hygiene from a farm to a dairy processing enterprise. Swiss-Ukrainian milk safety project held next trainings in Poltava oblast
On 18 September 2017 the Milk Safety Project organized the training for milk collection point employees and transporters in cooperation with Pyryatyn Cheese Plant PJSC. The aim of the training was to increase awareness on the importance of maintaining cold chain with high hygiene standards from a farm to a processing plant. During the training the Project speakers highlighted the following issues: best practices of transporting milk, milk quality control, sampling as well as whether cooling milk removes all the risks and whether personal hygiene is a part of the story.

The milk safety project held trainings for medium-sized milk producers in Mykolaiv oblast: learn best practices from the best
On 13-14 September 2017 the first training for medium-sized milk producers – suppliers to partner dairy processing enterprises was held in Mykolaiv oblast. The main aim of the training was to gain clear understanding of how important it is to apply best practices of milk production, feeding and herd management, breeding and genetics, milking hygiene with the purpose of improving raw milk quality and safety.

The training for rayon directorate of SSFSCP in Mykolaiv oblast was conducted
On September, 13-15 in Kobleve the training for specialists of territorial bodies and the Main Directorate of the State Service of Food Safety and Consumer Protection was held in Mykolaiv oblast. The main purpose was to raise awareness about the importance of applying best practices for the production of safety milk and dairy products, and to apply a modern inspection approach at all stages of the dairy value chain. The theoretical part of the training focused on the peculiarities of introducing the best practices used to produce safety milk (according to Ukrainian and the EU legislation). Trainings for Transporters and Milk Collection Points Were Held in Mykolayiv Oblast
The Swiss-Ukrainian Milk Safety Project together with milk processors-project’s partner organized the trainings for transportes and milk collection points (MCP) workers in the Mykolaiv oblast. These trainings were conducted within the framework of the project activity aimed at raising awareness about the importance of maintaining a cool chain with high standards of hygiene from the farm / MCP to the dairy processing enterprise.
On September 11, 2017 milk purchasers and drivers of the PJSC "Pervomaisky Milk Canning Plant" gathered in the local Culture House in Velhanska, Kirovograd oblast. Among the trainers of the event was also Deputy Director of raw materials "Pervomaisky MCP" Galyna Volodymyrivna Mazur. The Milk Safety Project conducted the training of trainers for milk processors – project’s partners
On August 29-31, the Milk Safety Project gathered the representatives of dairy processors within the framework of the activity “Training of Trainers” of the Component 3. The main goal of the event was to formulate a clear understanding of the basic concepts in the following areas: feeding and management of the herd, breeding and genetics, as well as milking hygiene in the context of the impact on the safety, quality and quantity of milk.
After the theoretical part of the training, the group conducted the study visit to the dairy farm “Ostryukivske” (Ostrivka village, Bila Tserkva rayon, Kyiv oblast). The aim of the visit is to evaluate in practice the application of best practices in the management of feeding, hygiene and milking technique for the production of safety and high-quality milk and optimize the efficiency of production. The Training for Transporters and Milk Purchasing Specialists was Conducting in Poltava Oblast
On August 17, 2017 Swiss-Ukrainian Milk Safery Project organized the training for transporters and milk purchasing specialists in Bilotserkivka village Velykobogachansky rayon Poltava oblast. The training was held jointly for two project’s partners: PE "Belotserkivska agroindustrial group" and Orzhytsky Dairy Plant. The purpose of the training is to increase awareness of the importance of maintaining a cool chain with high standards of hygiene from farm to processor. The Milk Safety Project Conducted the Training for Rayon Directorate of SSFSCP in Vinnytsia oblast
On August 16-18, 2017 in Khmilnyk in the framework of the Swiss-Ukrainian Milk Safety Project the training for specialists of rayon directorate of SSFSCP in Vinnytsia oblast was held. Around 40 representatives of the territorial bodies of the SSFSCP, as well as representatives of the Main Directorate of the SSFSCP in Vinnytsia Oblast attended the training.
At the beginning of the event the Deputy of Ukraine Yurchyshyn Petro Vasyliovych welcomed the participants. He told about the legislative initiatives in food safety: "The safety of products is a strategically important area of work, because it is the health of people and the future of our country, therefore, we should all pay the maximum attention to this issue".

The second workshop on risk assessment for representatives of the SSFSCP was held
On July, 11 – 13, Swiss-Ukrainian Milk Safety Project held a technical workshop for representatives of the State Service of Food Safety and Consumer Protection on the basic principles of risk assessment in the field of animal and human health, and food safety. The workshop was attended by representatives of the core group of risk assessment team (veterinarians, epidemiologists, laboratory experts), specialists of the central body of SSFSCP and oblast departments of pilot oblasts, State Scientific Institute of laboratory diagnostics and veterinary and sanitary examination, as well as other interested persons.

    The Milk Safety Project conducted a training on milk quality data for dairy processors
    In the framework of component 3 of the Swiss-Ukrainian Milk Safety Project the first training on milk quality data for dairy processors was held on July 12-13, 2017. The goal of the training is to assess the impact of the quality of raw milk on its processing and the products quality. High somatic cells count, total bacterial count, antibiotic residues, low protein and fat content, and milk falsification have become key criteria for cost-benefit analysis by dairy processing companies.
    The representatives of one of the largest Swiss cheese association FROMARTE Christian Schmuc and Stefan Truttmann presented theoretical aspects and their calculations to assess the loss of products production. The training was moderated by Project Coordinator Sabine Reist.

    Swiss associations shared their experience in ensuring the quality and safety of milk
    On July 11, 2017 Swiss-Ukrainian milk safety project organized the awareness workshop "The Experience and the Role of Swiss Dairy Associations in the Quality and Safety of Milk". The event was attended by representatives of dairy processors, associations, the Ministry of Agrarian Policy and Food of Ukraine, State Service of Food Safety and Consumer Protection, Institute of Food Resources, the coordinator of the project Dr. Sabine Reist and representatives of one of the largest Swiss association of cheese producers FROMARTE Christian Shmuts and Stefan Truttmann.

    FOURTH TRAINING OF TRAINERS IN THE FRAMEWORK OF COMPONENT 3 OF THE MILK SAFETY PROJECT WAS CONDUCTED
    From the 29th till the 31st of May the fourth trainings of trainers-representatives of 10 milk-processors –partners of the Project took place. One of the goal of the meeting was to debrief the results of a study visit to Switzerland. Participants shared their impressions, lessons learned, and knowledge gained during the study visit, which was conducted on the 14th-20th of May.
    The milk processors presented the upcoming future decisions and plan of actions based on the results of the mission, as well as the intentions to conduct trainings for their milk.

    On May 14-20, a group of dairy industry representatives visited Switzerland on a study trip within the Swiss-Ukrainian Milk Safety Project Component 3. All dairy companies are partners of the Project. The main objectives of the trip were:
  • to clearly understand how Swiss milk processing companies, ensure safe and good quality milk for processing;
  • to learn about existing procedures to provide a continuous cool chain from a manufacturer to a processing plant;

    THE SECOND MODULE OF TRAINING OF TRAINERS FOR STATE SERVICE OF UKRAINE FOR FOOD SAFETY AND CONSUMER PROTECTION WAS CONDUCTED
    In the framework of the second component of the Swiss-Ukrainian Milk Safety Project on the May, 17-19, 2017 SSFSCP’s specialists from the pilot oblasts (Poltava, Kharkiv, Vinnytsia, Mykolayiv) and specialists of the Main Directorate of SSFSCP in Kyiv oblast and the central office took part in the second module of training of trainers. The main topics of the training focused on understanding the importance of using the best practices to produce safety milk.     SWISS-UKRAINIAN PROJECT DEVELOPED THE FLYER ABOUT LUMPY SKIN DISEASE
    Considering the unfavorable epizootic situation regarding Lumpy Skin Disease (LSD) in neighboring countries and the insects occurrence because of warm season, the risk of LSD in Ukraine has risen sharply. To increase awareness of the cattle owners about this disease and to prevent its spread State Service of Ukraine for Food Safety and Consumer Protection initiated the development of an information flyer on LSD and Swiss-Ukrainian milk safety project produced it. National and international experts were involved into flyer development. 30,000 copies were published and distributed to the cattle owners by territorial bodies of SSFSCP.
    The LSD causes large economic losses due to the significant reduction in the milk and meat production and the reduc tion in the quality of raw hides. Mortality from LSD in cattle is about 10%.     SWISS-UKRAINIAN MILK SAFETY PROJECT TOGETHER WITH PYRIATYN CHEESE PLANT BEGAN CONSULTATIVE PROGRAM FOR MILK PRODUCERS
    On the 21st and 22nd of March 2017 the trainings were held for small-scale milk producers in Berezova Rudka village of Pyriatyn rayon and in Kurinka village of Chornuhynskyi rayon Poltava oblast. The training on the importance of best practices in the production of safety and quality milk was attended by over 70 participants from six neighboring villages. The representatives of SSFSCP in Pyriatyn rayon Andriy Sereda and Volodymyr Danylenko, and technologies of raw material of JSC "Pyriatyn cheese plant" Svetlana Tsarapina had the speech about importance of milk safety and quality on the training.

    SWISS-UKRAINIAN MILK SAFETY PROJECT CONDUCTED THE TRAINING FOR SMALL-SCALE MILK PRODUCERS IN MYKOLAYIV OBLAST
    On the 16th of March the experts of Swiss-Ukrainian milk safety project met with small-scale milk producers in Kryve Ozero village in Mykolaiv oblast in the framework of trainings on the importance of best practices in the production of safe and qualitative milk. It was the beginning of the program for milk suppliers of project’s partner PJSC "Pervomaisk Dairy Plant". The training was attended by 28 participants.
    Acting Head of SSFSCP Directorate in Kryve Ozero Rayon Tetiana Stakhiva in her speech stressed the importance of epizootic welfare and monitoring indicators of milk quality and safety, including small-scale milk producers.

    Milk Safety Project Held the Round Table on Drugs Residues in Milk
    On the 14th of March the Swiss-Ukrainian Milk Safety Project conducted the All-Ukrainian round table “Control’s problem of the presence of drugs residues and other inhibitors in milk”. The meeting was attainted by 14 dairy processors-partners of the project, industry leaders, SAFOSO Director Manon Schuppers and moderator Marc Gramberger.
    During the meeting, participants discussed the situation with the inhibitors residues in milk in Ukraine, highlighted the main reasons of non-reporting on positive consignments by dairy processors. Then the participants discussed and proposed measures for solving this problem. The next step is developing an action plan with responsible parties and the involvement of stakeholders from Ministry of Agrarian Policy and Food of Ukraine, the State Service of Ukraine on Food Safety and Consumer Protection, dairy associations, processors, milk producers...

    Milk Safety Project Conducted the Training for Risk Assessment Team
    Swiss-Ukrainian Milk Safety Project held the third training for the risk assessment team on epidemiological surveillance on animal health based on risk assessment. The participants improved their knowledge in epidemiology, including the determination of the diseases spread measures and the development of crosssectional epidemiological study.
    During the roundtable, the participants identified the most relevant hazards in milk in Ukraine and discussed various aspects of the implementation of cross-sectional study to assess prevalence of identified hazards.

    On the 20-th of February, Swiss-Ukrainian milk safety project for the third time gathered future trainers from milk processors-partners from the pilot oblasts for the three-day training in Kiev.
    The main purpose of the meeting is to identify critical problems, decisions, key messages and ways of presentation the technical topics for future training for transporters and personnel of milk collection points (MCP) regarding the importance of establishing a cool chain with high standards of hygiene on the farm / MCP to dairy companies. The participants continued to discuss the above-mentioned topics during the field visit to MCP in Prushynka village.     The trainings for small-scale milk producers were held in the Kharkiv oblast
    On February, 15-16, 2017 trainings for small milk producers were conducted in the village Zakutnivka and Zmiiv town in Kharkiv oblast. This time, the Swiss-Ukrainian Milk Safety Project in collaboration with the dairy processor "C-Trans" gathered over 80 people from 9 villages to familiarize with best practices of production safety and quality milk. Such high attendance was reached thanks to professional work of milk collection coordinators of "C-Trans" and future trainers from Project’s partner.     On February 8, 2017, the experts of Milk Safety Project conducted the training for small milk producers in Mykolaiv oblast on the importance of best practices implementation in the production of safe and qualitative milk. The training took place at the project partner - JSC "Bashtanka Cheese plant" in Bashtanka. The training was attended by more than 20 participants: producers of milk, workers of milk collection points, specialists of milk purchase department of JSC «Bashtanka Cheese plant", specialists of territorial State Service of Ukraine on Food Safety and Consumer Protection.
    The participants discussed many issues, including the effectiveness of tests for detection of antibiotic residues in milk and practical aspects in milking technique after calving period, antimicrobial resistance etc. The experts answered many questions...

    Milk Safety Project conducted the training for small scale producers in Vinnytsia oblast
    On January, 24-25, 2017 Swiss-Ukrainian Milk Safety Project held the training on safety and quality milk production for small scale milk producers in villages Kordyshivka and Samhorodok Koziatyn region Vinnytsia oblast. The key topics of these events were: proper milking technique, identification of clinical and subclinical mastitis, correct use of antibiotics, compliance with withdrawal period and the importance of keeping records. There were 70 participants in two trainings. Some producers of neighboring villages and workers of milk collection point from the Prushanka village joined the trainings.
    The trainings were conducted by national and international experts. Most participants interested in pre and post-diping, clinical and subclinical mastitis, falsification of milk. Milk producers expressed the desire to learn more about the keeping conditions...

    The first training of trainers for SSFSCP’s professionals was held
    On December, 20-22, 2016 the training of trainers (ToT) to raise awareness of the importance of applying the best practices of the safe milk production was conducted in the framework of Milk Safety Project.
    The inspectors and other specialists of the SSFSCP (central body) and of the Main Directorates of the SSFSCP from pilot oblasts (Poltava, Kharkiv, Mykolaiv, Vinnitsa) attended in the training. There were also specialists of the Main Directorate of the SSFSCP in Kyiv oblast.

    The Steering Committee of Milk Safety Project was held
    On the 1st of December the second meeting of the Steering Committee of the Swiss-Ukrainian project "Establishment of a risk-based food safety control system in the dairy value chain in Ukraine" was conducted. The meeting was attended by the Head of SSFSCP Volodymyr Lapa, Director of the Department of Animal Husbandry Mykola Kvasha, Program manager of the SECO HQ Barbara Jaeggin, Director of the project Manon Schuppers, representatives of professional associations and other stakeholders.

    International Conference on Milk Safety was Held in Kiev
    On 17-18th of November the first international conference on risk-based milk safety control systems took place. The conference is organized by the Swiss-Ukrainian Milk Safety Project with support of the Swiss Cooperation Office in Ukraine and the State Service of Ukraine on Food Safety and Consumer Protection.

    The second meeting on the check-list was conducted
    On the 31th of October in the framework of Milk Safety Project the second meeting of the working group on the list of questions (checklists) and technical guidelines for the inspection was held. The meeting was attended by representatives of State Service of Ukraine on Food Safety and Consumer Protection, State Research Institute of Laboratory Diagnostics and Veterinary Expertise, expert of FAO and other interested persons.

    The first workshop on risk assessment was held
    On October, 25-27, 2016 Milk Safety Project conducted technical workshop to train representatives of public authorities on key principles of risk assessment, value chain analysis, economic analysis in animal and human health and food safety.
    The training was attended by 20 participants: representatives of core group of risk assessment (veterinarians, epidemiologists, laboratory experts), specialists of the State Service of Ukraine on Food Safety and Consumer Protection (central and regional levels), the State Research Institute of Laboratory Diagnostics and Veterinary Expertise and other interested persons.

    The Milk Safety Project Conducted Training for Risk Assessment Team
    On October, 6-7, the second training for the risk assessment team about epidemiological surveillance on animal health based on risk assessment was held.
    The training was attended by the representatives of the State Service of Ukraine on Food Safety and Consumer Protection (central and regional levels), the State Research Institute of Laboratory Diagnostics and Veterinary Expertise and National Agricultural University of Ukraine.     Sep 27.2016 
    Milk Safety Project conducted laboratories assessment
    On September, 19-23 the experts of Milk Safety Project assessed the work and effectiveness of the national laboratories network in Poltava, Vinnitsa, Mykolayiv and Kharkiv oblasts that are involved in analyzing quality and safety of the raw milk.
    This mission will help to assess and analyze the performance of basic research of raw milk, the measures of internal and external quality assurance of laboratories, and to identify training topics that will be discussed and covered in future trainings. The assesment will define the needs in laboratory equipment, which project plans to purchase for the laboratories in future.
    The experts from Swiss laboratory Daniel Gerber and Martin Stierli were involved in the process of laboratory assessment.

    "Trainings of trainers" for milk processors are launched
    On September, 12 - 16 in Kiev the first training of future trainers was conducted. The representatives of the dairy processing companies that were selected to participate in the project from Mykolaiv, Vinnitsa, Poltava and Kharkiv oblasts took place in the trainning. In total, the training was attended by 19 participants from 10 companies, which were divided into two groups. The main objectives of the training - to familiarize participants with the concept of "training of trainer", to identify critical problems for small milk producers, to develop solutions and delivery methods. During these training the representatives of milk processors together with project’s experts will develop and implement long-term training programs for milk suppliers to improve milk quality and safety.

    Working visit in Mykolayiv oblast
    On August, 18-19, 2016 the project team together with Assistant Director of Swiss Cooperation Office in Ukraine Viktor Shutkevych visited the Main Directorate of the State Service of Ukraine on Food Safety and Consumer Protection in the Mykolaiv oblast, Regional State Laboratory of Veterinary Medicine and dairy processor "Lactalis" and its suppliers of raw milk: milk collection point and dairy farm.

    The Awareness Workshop for Milk Processors Took Place
    On August, 16-17, 2016 Milk Safety Project organized the awareness workshop for milk processors that were selected to participate in the project. The event was attended by 15 participants from 10 dairy enterprises in Ukraine.
    The workshop was focused on familiarizing participants with the planned activities in the third component "Private industry engagement in food safety control system" and the importance of safe raw milk and risk reduction strategies.

    First Discussion of Draft Order on Hygiene was Conducted
    On August 15, 2016 the joint meeting of working groups of the two components of the project: "Institutional reform" and "Private Sector" was held. The meeting was attended by representatives of State Service on Food Safety and Consumer Protection of Ukraine, Ministry of Agrarian Policy and Food of Ukraine, dairy associations, experts of technical assistance projects in the sphere of food safety and other stakeholders.

    On July 28, 2016 the first organic dairies in Western Ukraine "Staryi Porytsk" (Volyn oblast) was officially opened.

    Kharkivska, Poltavska, Vinnytska, and Mykolaivska are the pilot project oblasts
    On June 9, 2016 in the joint meeting of the State Service on Food Safety and Consumer Protection of Ukraine, Swiss Cooperation Office in Ukraine and the milk safety project team was made the decision to choose four pilot oblasts in which the project will implement its activities.     The first session of the risk assessment team was conducted
    On June 1, 2016 in Kiev the meeting of risk assessment team was held. There were participants from the State Service of Ukraine on Food Safety and Consumer Protection, the State Research Institute of Laboratory Diagnostics and Veterinary Expertise, the EU project on food safety and the SwissUkrainian Milk Safety project.
    The overall goal of the group is to conduct the risk assessment at all stages of the dairy value chain.     May 20.2016 
    The project team conducted a working visit to the organic milk production
    On the May 19, 2016 the experts of the Swiss-Ukrainian project on milk safety together with the international expert Jorge Pinto Ferreira and project manager Igor Kravchenko visited the dairy plant PJSC "EtnoProdukt" and its own dairy farm.
    The main purpose of the working visit to the plant "EtnoProdukt" (villiage Velyka Oleksandrivka, Kyiv oblast) is aimed at acquaintance with the features of organic dairy production in Ukraine. The control system on milk quality and safety at all stages of the dairy value chain was presented to project’s experts: begin with raw milk receiving, it processing and end with finished products storage and products selling.
    The next destination was the dairy farm in Chernihiv oblast, which is the only one supplier of organic milk for processing to PJSC "EtnoProdukt". Farm workers told about the peculiarities of the milk production process...

    The Swiss-Ukrainian project helps to establish new milk safety control system
    At the beginning of March, 2016 the Swiss-Ukrainian Project “Establishment of a risk-based food safety control system in the dairy value chain in Ukraine” (“Milk Safety Project”) has been officially launched in Kyiv.
